Below are some frequently asked questions regarding Hampton Behavioral Health Center. If you require additional information or have questions not addressed here, please call 609-518-2100 and the staff of the Access Center will be happy to assist you.

How does someone get referred to Hampton Behavioral Health Center? Anyone can make a referral to Hampton. Referrals are often made by healthcare professionals (physicians, social workers, psychologists) or by an agency (community mental health or hospital ER). Referrals may also be made by family members, friends, clergy, or the individual in need of service.

The screening center staff at my local Emergency Room said I have to be admitted to their hospital's unit. Do I have a choice? Patients and families absolutely have a choice as to where they can receive services. Hampton's specialized programs are different than what you are likely to find on a general hospital unit (i.e. separate units for adolescents, adults, dual-diagnosis, and geriatric patients). Patients and families can specifically request Hampton. Families can even call Hampton's Access Center to check on bed availability. Because we are in-network with most insurances, admission to Hampton is usually very easy.

What is the cost of an assessment? The assessment is provided at no charge. A specially trained counselor will meet with you (and your family if appropriate), to help determine the appropriate level of care necessary.

Do I need to schedule an appointment? Appointments for assessments are not necessary, but for your convenience, it is recommended. Because our Access Center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, an appointment can usually be scheduled that same day or at any other time convenient for you. Appointments may be made by calling 609-518-2100.

Will my insurance cover the services I receive? Hampton accepts most major insurances and HMOs, including Medicare and Champus. We are also eligible to accept Medicaid for clients under 21 and over 65 years of age. If you are uncertain as to whether or not Hampton is in the network with your insurance company, please call us at 609-518-2100.

Do I need precertification for admission? Depending on your insurance plan, you may need prior authorization before admission. The staff of Hampton's Access Center will be happy to process any preauthorization requirements with your insurance company.

How long will I be in the hospital? While the length of stay varies with each individual, patients are usually here for approximately 5-8 days.

What should I bring to the hospital? You should plan to bring about 3 changes of comfortable, casual clothing (wash and wear). You will also need appropriate footwear (sneakers) and overnight personal care items such as a toothbrush and shampoo. Please leave any items of value at home for safekeeping. This would include jewelry, gameboys, CD players, and cell phones. You do not need to bring items such as razors; these will be provided on the unit.

Will I be able to smoke while in the hospital? Hampton supports a smoke-free environment and encourages all patients to take advantage of the smoking cessation information available. However, for those adults who choose to smoke, clients are escorted outside to the Serenity Garden for regular smoke breaks. Under no circumstances are adolescent patients permitted to smoke.

When are visiting hours? Each unit has its own designated visiting hours. There are also guidelines regarding who may visit on a unit (e.g. small children are not permitted). Patients and family members should check with the Access staff and the unit staff for current visiting hours and related information.
